SUPER HERO MASK TUTORIAL

Updated: Nov 8, 2019

If you want to paint your mask in one or more colors, you can use any acrylic paint, even cheap craft paint from the dollar store. If you don’t want the paint to rub or chip off, you will need to seal the mask with either watered down white glue, or plasti dip.

Start out by measuring the distance from the center of your nose, to the farthest side of your face just before your hairline. This will be the length of one side of your mask. To make it symmetrical, complete one side and then trace the other half or flip it to make both sides the

same.

Next, measure the distance from the center of your nose to the inner corner of your eye. To determine how big to make the eye holes, be sure to measure from the inner corner to the outer corner of your eye.

After you’ve made these measurements, consider the height of the mask. This dimension will be determined by its overall shape. You can also measure the height of your eye socket to get an approximate size of the eye hole.

Once you have all your measurements and have decided on the shape of your mask, you can draw one side of it and then trace the other side. I usually start with the right side of the mask but either side is fine.

When you want to make a mask that is two-toned or three-toned, you can trace the mask out in all of the desired colors and then mix and match or layer them together. Contact cement and hot glue are both good choices for adhering the pieces together.

To give your mask some depth or weathering, you can just dry brush a color onto the mask, or even outline the edges depending on the look you’re going for.

You can also add in shading lines to give the illusion of depth or accentuate features. You can also try to heat your foam slightly and apply it over a life cast if you have one or a Styrofoam head. That should help you get the desired shape.

To wear your mask, apply it with Spirit Gum, which can found at any Halloween or costume store or Pros aide. Do a test patch first to make sure you don’t have any allergies to the products. The masks can be used over and over again or remade easily.
